TEAM RULES

Teams & Eligibility

  • The Kiwanis Dragon Boat Festival Regatta requires that all teams must have a minimum of 8 female paddlers in their racing team complement of 20 paddlers, 1 drummer (drummer can be borrowed from another team but is required to be on the boat during each race to qualify the team) and 1 steersperson.
  • < li>All team members must be 15 years of age or older in the year of competition. No team member under the age of 18 may practice or race without written consent plus a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.
  • A final team roster plus all outstanding individual waivers must be submitted to the official race co-ordinator(s) prior to 8:00 a.m. on race day - Saturday, July 19, 2008.
  • The maximum number of team members on a dragon boat roster is 25. This includes 1 team manager and 1 captain, both of which may or may not be crew members. Under special circumstances, and only by approval of the race co-ordinator, a team roster may be expanded to 28 total team members. An example would be an organization where team members are required to work shifts and/or weekends. Requests for an expanded roster must be faxed to the event office at (519) 699-9300 (Jamie Meek).
  • An individual registered as a paddler may paddle only for that particular team. Drummers and steerspersons can be either male or female. They may participate on other teams in those capacities. They may also participate as a paddler for their team (i.e.: switching spots with another registered team member) or may choose to register and participate as a paddler for another team during the event (but they can't do both).
  • The team manager is responsible for the conduct of the team and for distributing all practice and race information to team members. The manager also is responsible for collecting and submitting all forms and waivers and serving as liaison with the official race co-ordinator(s).Please also note that this year fanny pack Personal Floatation Devices (PFD'S) do NOT qualify as adequate PFD's

Safety & Waivers

  • All team members must sign a waiver prior to participation in any practice session or race. The team manager is responsible for duplicating, distributing and submitting all signed waivers to the race co-ordinator (or delegate) prior to the first practice session.
  • Be aware of forecast weather conditions during practices and on race day. The practice supervisor is responsible for the suspension or cancellation of practices due to hazardous weather or marine conditions. Re-scheduling of cancelled practices will be given top priority. However, this provision is based on availability of practice time.
